Shera's Copper Rainbow
Cone 6 Oxidation

Recipe:
Custer Feldspar 35
Flint 16
Zinc Oxide 17
Ball Clay 12
Wollastonite 20
+
Copper 4

Evaluation:
This is an expressive glaze that transitions from teal to turquoise, and displays the motion of the glaze. The motion of this glaze is waterfall in effect, and additionally transitions from translucent to opaque on the peeks and ridges of the clay texture that adds a charming depth to the glaze. The translucent sections of this glaze are a leafy organic green celadon that emphasizes the creamy and rich teal/turquoise. It is a bit unstable, however well worth working with. High gloss.

This glaze is one of 18 tests. Students of the fall 2009 semester tested in 100 g. batches, recalculated to assure glaze stability, then further tested 500 g. batches, and finally compiled a list of 18 glazes to go through a uniformed batch test. All batches of this 18 recipe set were mixed through a process of precise measurements, 60 and 80 mesh screening, were dipped on cone 04 bisque for 3 seconds, and were finally fired to a witnessed cone 6 oxidation in an electric kiln. (Firing schedules are to follow shortly).

Zinc Oxide 7.8
EPK 1.3
Flint 5.2
Gerst Bor. 15.0

Evaluation:
Very unstable. As an exterior glaze this is incredibly runny and drippy. This may be a nice liner glaze, and pools in the base of a cup to a rich deep black/brown.

This glaze is one of 18 tests. Students of the fall 2009 semester tested in 100 g. batches, recalculated to assure glaze stability, then further tested 500 g. batches, and finally compiled a list of 18 glazes to go through a uniformed batch test. Flint 15.8
EPK 7
Magnessium Carb 7
Bone Ash 11.6
Lithium Carb 10
+

Evaluation:
This is an alteration on the traditional tomato red recipe. It is unstable, but spots nicely to rusty red through dark brown. It is high gloss and has nice potential, but needs work on dripping.

This glaze is one of 18 tests. Students of the fall 2009 semester tested in 100 g. batches, recalculated to assure glaze stability, then further tested 500 g. batches, and finally compiled a list of 18 glazes to go through a uniformed batch test. Recipe:
Custer 31
Flint 25
Whiting 22
EPK 12
Talc 8
Bone Ash 2
+
Copper Carb 6.5

Evaluation:
This is a stable transulent and high gloss glaze that transitions from the lip of a cup to the base with a crisp transparency to a rich deep oribe. Reminds me of the transition from shallow to deep water.

This glaze is one of 18 tests. Students of the fall 2009 semester tested in 100 g. batches, recalculated to assure glaze stability, then further tested 500 g. batches, and finally compiled a list of 18 glazes to go through a uniformed batch test. Recipe:
Neph Sye 24
Dolomite 11
Gerst Bor. 12
Whiting 4
Zinc Oxide 2
EPK 7
Flint 40
+
Rutile 8

Evaluation:
Again the 72 base glaze is an incredible and stable base glaze. With the addition of Rutile the 72 base is a visually rich buttery glaze. This combination captures the movement of the glaze and highlights the peeks and dips of the clay body texture.

EPK 7
Flint 40
+
Crimson Mason Stain 10

Evaluation:
This is an opaque and stable glaze. The 72 Base doesn't allow for rich color translation, however this pale, pale, pale violet is a beautiful twist on pastels.

This glaze is one of 18 tests. Students of the fall 2009 semester tested in 100 g. batches, recalculated to assure glaze stability, then further tested 500 g. batches, and finally compiled a list of 18 glazes to go through a uniformed batch test. "72" Base with Vanadium
Cone 6 oxidation

Recipe:
Neph Sye 24
Dolomite 11
Gerstly Bor. 12
Whiting 4
Zinc Oxide 2
EPK 7
Flint 40
+
Vanadium 5

Evaluation:
Unsure how to describe this glaze. Visually it looks dry, however the pooling and separation of color is quite glossy. Their is an extreme separation of color in this glaze that is visually conflicting with tactile assumptions. Their is almost an oily separation. In places where an initiation of a drip begins, the best analogy I can come up with is olive oil mixed with butter. The opaque coloring (butterish) almost floats on the clear olive oil gloss. Interesting glaze!

This glaze is one of 18 tests. Students of the fall 2009 semester tested in 100 g. batches, recalculated to assure glaze stability, then further tested 500 g. batches, and finally compiled a list of 18 glazes to go through a uniformed batch test. Cone 6 Oxidation

Recipe:
Kona F-4 49
Whiting 18
Zinc Oxide 9
EPK 1
Flint 6
Gerstly Bor. 17
+
Red Iron Oxide 9.0

Evaluation:
Extremly unstable. The positive qualities...transitions nicely from matt to gloss, and the interior pools to a rich and deep black/brown. However this glaze runns! Only use on top half (if not higher, top third).

This glaze is one of 18 tests. Students of the fall 2009 semester tested in 100 g. batches, recalculated to assure glaze stability, then further tested 500 g. batches, and finally compiled a list of 18 glazes to go through a uniformed batch test. Cone 6 Oxidation

Recipe:
Kona F-4 51.0
Whiting 19.0
Zinc Oxide 9.0
EPK 15.0
Flint 6.0
+
Cobalt Carb 1.0

Evaluation:
Semi-Satin Glaze. Charming glaze that transitions from a subtle periwinkle (i cant think of a word to describe this purplish blue, and I apologize that I chose periwinkle as a descriptor)to a strong saturated pastel blue. The transition between colors marks and highlights the movement of this glaze that again adds exciting depth to a traditional satin blue.

This glaze is one of 18 tests. Students of the fall 2009 semester tested in 100 g. batches, recalculated to assure glaze stability, then further tested 500 g. batches, and finally compiled a list of 18 glazes to go through a uniformed batch test. Cone 6 Oxidation

Recipe:
Neph Sye 51.0
Whiting 19.0
Zinc Oxide 9.0
EPK 15.0
Flint 6.0
+
Red Iron Oxide 9.0

Evaluation:
Opaque tan glaze. This is an interesting glaze with transitions between dusty tan and leather tan. From a distance this glaze translates a solid tan, however up-close this glaze has allot of charcter and expression. A bit unstable, however altering the gravity or thinner application may resolve dripping. This glaze will be tested again under the same name (test 3 from Fall 2009)and re-posted. Inital test showed the gravity and application to be correct, however this is a glaze worth perfecting. Please check back for alternative test results and images.

This glaze is one of 18 tests. Students of the fall 2009 semester tested in 100 g. batches, recalculated to assure glaze stability, then further tested 500 g. batches, and finally compiled a list of 18 glazes to go through a uniformed batch test. test 1

Black
Cone 6 Oxidation

Recipe:

Evaluation:
This glaze is a rich black with exciting depth. It has the characteristics of gas pooling in water. An extremely stable glaze with a visualy oily or tar like movement that captures time. From a distance caries a strong gloss black presence, however when viewed up close is expressive and transitions with iridescent(ish)movement. In this test the overall gravity and application of 3 seconds was a hair too long. The dripping view within the immage is not a result of an unstable glaze, rather application should be changed, or a small addition of water would produce a more stable hold on the cup.
NOT FOOD SAFE
